How to Customise a 4D3N Private Charter Route in Komodo: Which Stops You Can Swap, Add or Skip in 2026

You've chosen a private charter and you're looking at a sample route. You can't tell which stops are fixed and which you can change. On a 4D3N Komodo yacht charter, three anchors should stay: Padar, one ranger-led dragon trek and Manta Point. The beaches, snorkelling stops and the order of the days are open to change. Hello Flores has planned and booked Komodo boat trips since 2018 for more than 12,500 travellers. The best custom routes we see change the order and the time spent at each stop. They rarely change the map.

TL;DR

- Keep Padar, one dragon trek (Rinca or Komodo) and Manta Point. These are what people fly in for.

- You can swap Pink Beach, Kanawa, Gili Lawa Darat, Siaba Besar, Kelor and Manjarite to suit your group.

- Pengah Island and Pink Rock belong to the 5D4N route. On a 4D3N trip, adding one means dropping something else.

- Padar runs on timed permit sessions, so set your Padar timing when you confirm the itinerary.

- Take a morning flight into Labuan Bajo and board the same day, so day one counts.

What is fixed in a 4D3N private charter route, and what can change?

Geography sets the sample route as a loop. That is why customising it mostly means changing the order and pace, not adding new places. The Hello Flores 3D2N sample route covers Siaba Besar or Sebayur, Taka Makassar, Manta Point, Padar, Pink Beach, Kampung Komodo or Rinca, Kalong, Manjarite and Kelor. The 4D3N version adds Gili Lawa Darat and Kanawa.

Three things limit how far you can rewrite it:

  1. Permits are booked by time slot. Park fees are included when you book through Hello Flores, and the boat handles them. The Padar slot still has to be chosen before you sail.
  2. Boats can only moor in set places. Overnight spots come from a short list.
  3. Weather, currents and wind shape the day's plan. The harbourmaster (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues a Sailing Approval Letter for every departure as an independent check.

Think of the route as a bus line. You can skip most stops or stay longer at them. But the timetable at the busiest stop, Padar, is booked before the bus leaves.

Verdict: you control the order, the pace and most of the stops beyond the three anchors. Geography and the permit clock control the rest.

Which Komodo stops can you swap, add or skip?

With those limits in mind, the stops fall into three groups: anchors, flexible stops and add-ons.

StopRole on the routeVerdictNotes
PadarViewpoint hike, up to 2 hoursKeepTimed permit; choose sunrise or later early
Rinca or Komodo IslandRanger-led dragon trekKeep oneSightings on Rinca are pretty common
Manta Point / Taka MakassarMantas and a sandbankKeep Manta PointMantas live here year-round
Pink BeachSnorkelling and beach timeFlexibleStay longer for couples
Gili Lawa DaratSecond viewpoint hike, in the northFlexibleSkip if Padar is enough hiking
KanawaGentle snorkellingFlexibleKeep for families
Siaba Besar / SebayurSnorkel stopFlexibleSwap for a dive
Kampung KomodoVillage visitFlexibleDragons only occasionally seen
Kelor / ManjariteShort stops near Labuan BajoSwap freelyGood for the first afternoon
Pengah / Pink RockExtra stops on the 5D4N routeAdd by tradeEach one replaces a flexible stop

Two swaps come up more than any others.

  • Rinca instead of Komodo Island. Rinca usually wins for the dragon trek. Sightings there are pretty common, while on Komodo Island they depend more on luck.
  • Manta Point is about conditions, not the month. Mantas live at Manta Point and Manta Alley year-round. Keeping Manta Point on the route depends on the sea on the day.

Verdict: skip a beach before you skip a hike. Skip a hike before you skip the mantas.

How should you customise the route for your group?

The anchors stay the same for everyone. What changes from group to group is which flexible stops get the most time.

  • Families with young kids: Hello Flores notes the steep Padar Island trek is probably only suitable for children aged 8 and older. One parent can stay on the beach with younger kids while the others hike. Give Kanawa a long session, because snorkelling at Kanawa Island means slower currents, which makes it safer for kids. Augustine Phinisi, with kids' toys and a cruise director who is a marine biologist, is set up for this kind of trip.
  • Avid divers: swap two or three snorkel stops for Komodo dive sites. Certified advanced divers can ask about Crystal Rock and Golden Passage, which are both recommended for advanced divers. Dive tank and gear rental and dive courses usually cost extra.
  • Couples and honeymooners: use the flexible departure time to reach Padar or Gili Lawa Darat early. Then add a longer stop at Pink Beach. Small yachts such as Senja (2 cabins) or The Oracle (3 cabins) suit couples who want privacy.
  • First-timers: keep close to the sample route. It already covers two viewpoint hikes, a dragon trek, mantas and several snorkel stops.

Verdict: plan the flexible stops around the person with the narrowest needs. That is usually the youngest child or the keenest diver.

How do flights and booking order shape a Komodo charter?

A custom route only works if day one starts on the boat, so sort out your flights before you pick stops. Book in this order:

  1. Your international flight into Bali (Denpasar).
  2. The Flores and boat leg. The flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo takes about 1.5 hours. Labuan Bajo harbour is about 10 minutes by car from Komodo Airport, and the transfer is usually included. Choose a morning flight so you go straight to the boat. We recommend flying over the local ferry, which takes far longer and runs on a variable schedule.
  3. Bali. Put any spare days in Bali after the boat.

A good Labuan Bajo itinerary has no hotel night in town. If you land in the morning, you can spend the first afternoon at Kelor or Manjarite, close to the harbour. On a 4D3N charter, we keep every day on the water.

For the smoothest route, sail between March and June or in September and October. Conditions are good then, and the park is far less crowded.

Verdict: take a morning flight, board the same day and add extra days in Bali.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add stops that aren't on the sample route?

Yes. Pengah Island and Pink Rock are on the 5D4N route. On a 4D3N trip, each one usually replaces a flexible stop.

Is 4D3N long enough for a private charter?

We recommend at least 3 nights aboard for a private charter. That covers Padar, a dragon trek and more than one dive or snorkel site. Each boat also sets its own minimum number of nights.

Can I change the route once I'm on board?

You can change the order and timing with the crew. The Padar permit session is fixed in advance, though, and the weather can still change the plan.

Do I need to buy park permits myself?

No. Park entry, harbour and ranger fees are included when you book through Hello Flores, and the boat handles them on the day.

Will I see mantas?

Mantas live at Manta Point and Manta Alley year-round. Sea conditions on the day decide how good the encounter is.

Can one 4D3N charter include both Gili Lawa Darat and Kanawa?

Yes. Both are on the standard 4D3N sample route.
