How Far in Advance to Book a Komodo Boat in 2026: Lead Times for Shared Cabins vs Private Charters

You have rough dates and one worry: if you leave the boat too late, the trip you want is gone. Book a shared cabin 4 to 8 weeks ahead, and earlier if you need a solo-friendly cabin. Book a private charter 6 to 12 months ahead, which is when most group charters through Hello Flores are confirmed. Hello Flores is a booking platform for Komodo boats run by vetted partner operators. Since 2018 we have helped more than 12,500 travellers plan a Komodo National Park tour in both formats, so we see which cabins and dates sell out first.

Quick Answer

  • Shared cabins (open trips): book 4-8 weeks ahead. Solo-friendly cabins go first.
  • Private charters: book 6-12 months ahead, because one booking takes the whole boat off the calendar.
  • Best months: March to June and September to October bring good conditions and fewer crowds.
  • Booking order: international flight, then the Flores flight and boat, then Bali.

How far ahead should you book a shared cabin or Labuan Bajo open trip?

Shared trips have the shortest lead time, and Hello Flores recommends booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead. On a Labuan Bajo open trip you book a place on the boat, priced per person, on a fixed 3D2N or 4D3N route that runs to a set schedule. Each departure has several cabins to sell, so the date rarely vanishes overnight.

The cabin type is what runs out. Solo-friendly cabins fill first, such as the Crystal cabins on Cordelia Phinisi or the shared bunks on Papiton Lopi. Gender-separated berths or a women-only cabin can be arranged on request, but that depends on who else has booked, so booking earlier gives you more options.

Here's the good news: there is no single supplement on cabin bookings, so solo travellers pay only for their own spot. A 3D2N Komodo open trip covers Padar, Manta Point, Pink Beach and a dragon trek, making it a complete trip at the length it runs.

Verdict: if you are flexible on cabin, book 4 weeks out. If you are set on a solo cabin, aim for 8.

How far ahead should you book a private Komodo charter?

Private charters sit at the other end of the scale: most Hello Flores group charters are booked 6 to 12 months ahead. The reason is mechanical. A private charter is exclusive use of the whole boat, priced per boat.

Think of a restaurant. A shared cabin is a table, and the room fills seat by seat. A private charter is booking the whole restaurant, so one reservation takes that date away from everyone else.

Two factors push the lead time further:

  • Consecutive nights. Every charter has its own minimum-night rules. For a private charter, we recommend at least 4D3N to fit Padar, a dragon trek and more than one dive or snorkel site, so you need several free days in a row on one boat.
  • Small boats. Alexa takes one couple and Senja has two cabins, so each date sells only once. Honeymooners should book as soon as their flights are set.

Tie-breaker: charter if your group has about 8 or more people. Per-person costs start competing with shared cabins at around 6 to 8. A charter also suits families with young children who need a flexible schedule. Smaller groups with flexible dates usually pay less per person in a shared cabin. If you want a private Komodo sailing trip on fixed dates, start 6 to 12 months out.

Why do your travel dates change the lead time?

We recommend March to June and September to October, when conditions are good and the park is far less crowded. Mantas are resident year-round at Manta Point and Manta Alley, so you choose your months for conditions and crowds, not for the animals.

If you are planning a Komodo diving liveaboard, say so in your first message. Diving narrows the list of suitable boats, and tank and gear rental are usually extra.

In what order should you book a Komodo trip from Bali?

Once you know your lead time, the next question is sequence. Book your international flight first, then the Flores leg and the boat, then Bali.

  1. International flight into Denpasar.
  2. The boat and the flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo. The flight takes about 1.5 hours. Pick a morning arrival. Komodo Airport is about 10 minutes from the harbour and the transfer is usually included, so you go straight from the plane to the boat with no hotel night in town.
  3. Bali, built around your boat dates. If you have spare days, spend them extending this leg.

Always fly to Labuan Bajo. The ferry and overland routes through Sumbawa are local passenger services that take far longer and run on variable schedules.

Verdict: a Komodo trip from Bali works best when the boat is fixed before the hotels.

What happens after you book a Labuan Bajo liveaboard?

Once you have chosen a boat and date, the booking follows a set path:

  1. Send your dates, group size and preferences by email or WhatsApp.
  2. We aim to reply within 24 hours with boat options and an itinerary.
  3. A deposit secures your cabin or charter date.
  4. You receive a receipt and a written confirmation naming the dates, vessel and itinerary. Check that it names the exact boat.
  5. Permits and the harbourmaster's sailing clearance are arranged closer to departure.

The harbourmaster (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues a Sailing Approval Letter for each departure as an independent check. Every boat booked through Hello Flores is contractually required to hold valid insurance and current certification. You can also ask us to request documentation for a specific boat from its operator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a Labuan Bajo boat trip at the last minute?

Sometimes, for a shared cabin outside peak dates. It rarely works for a private charter, because one booking takes the whole boat.

Do I need to buy park tickets myself?

No. When you book through Hello Flores, Komodo National Park entry, harbour and ranger fees are covered and the boat handles them on the day.

What is the best Komodo liveaboard for a solo traveller?

A shared cabin on a solo-friendly boat such as Cordelia Phinisi or Papiton Duwa. Book it close to 8 weeks ahead.

Which boats suit families on a private charter?

Our family picks include Augustine Phinisi, Anne Bonny, Pinta and Dewata. The Padar hike suits children aged about 8 and over.

Can the itinerary change after I book?

Yes. Boat management can adjust the route for weather, currents, wind or safety. On a private charter, you shape the route from the start.
